Can Industry Experience Help Overcome Bad Credit?
Reviewed by George Burgess · Updated August 18, 2026
Industry experience can strengthen the context of a commercial truck financing request, especially for a startup, but it does not erase bad credit or guarantee approval. Under the HMTL startup program, 2 years of industry experience is a firm requirement. For established businesses, experience may still provide useful context, but this site does not publish a separate experience minimum beyond the startup rule.

Industry Experience Matters Most Clearly for Startups
The startup rule is straightforward.
A startup requires 2 years of industry experience.
That is a firm program requirement.
The startup down payment is also typically 40% of the purchase price.
Those two facts matter because a new company has less operating history than an established business.
The program therefore requires the person behind the startup to have relevant industry experience.
Do Not Guess What Counts as Experience
This site does not define a universal list of job titles, licenses or documents that automatically satisfy the 2-year rule.
A person may have experience as a company driver, equipment operator, technician, owner operator, route driver, dispatcher, field supervisor or in another role related to the truck being purchased.
Whether that specific background satisfies the requirement should be reviewed based on the actual history.
Do not assume unrelated work counts.
Do not assume related work fails simply because it was performed for someone else's company.
Contact HMTL and describe the background accurately.
Experience Does Not Remove the Credit Review
There is no minimum credit score.
HMTL specializes in credit challenged commercial truck and trailer buyers, including many borrowers with scores around 500.
Experience can be a positive part of the story, but it does not make the credit profile disappear.
The hard historical restriction remains no bankruptcy or repossession within the last 5 years.
Industry experience does not override that rule.
Experience Does Not Replace the Down Payment
A startup still typically needs typically 40% of the purchase price down.
Having 10 years of experience does not automatically mean the down payment disappears.
Likewise, having the full typical down payment does not replace the 2-year experience requirement.
The two are separate parts of the startup structure.
Experience Can Help Explain Why the Truck Makes Sense
A person who has spent years in an industry can usually explain the business purpose of the truck more clearly than someone entering an unfamiliar field.
That does not create a guaranteed underwriting advantage.
It does make the transaction easier to understand.
For example, someone with years of dump-truck experience buying a dump truck for a startup has a different background from someone entering hauling for the first time.
The exact experience still has to be reviewed.
Established Businesses Can Have Experience Beyond the Owner
For an existing company, the business may already have operating history.
This site does not publish a separate HMTL rule requiring a specific number of years of industry experience for every established-business file.
The firm 2-year rule applies to startups.
If an established business has unusual ownership, management or operating history, the specific file can be discussed rather than assuming a rule that has not been stated.
